  1. DP says:

Make him sit, and don’t take him anywhere, don’t put the leash on, don’t talk to him, praise of trying to get him to quiet, til he has settled down.

  2. greenman says:

    duct tape

  3. CCRIDER69 says:

HE’S JUST EXCITED TO GO OUT…

  4. jenny w says:

I don’t know my dog is the same we dare not get the lead out till we are ready to go out the door.

  5. Sage says:

DP has a good answer. My dog though does the same he is just so dog gone excited and ready to romp. He hops, jumps, barks, wags his tail; I just have to be stern with him and he realizes the change in voice and responds. It is cool though that they love ya so much they want to go walk and explore with you.

  6. zozo says:

distract him while you put it on and reward him for keeping quiet

  7. sacdogtrainer says:

Teach him that his actions have consequences. If he barks at you, turn around, walk away and put the leash down. In 1-3 minutes, try it again. If he barks, repeat the steps above.

If he is quiet, clip the leash on him and reward him with his walk. He already associates the leash with a walk, so having the leash attached to him is the reward for calm behavior.

You will have to be very consistent about this. It may take 10-12 repetitions the first time (not every time) for him to figure it out. So if you usually take him for an hour-long walk, for the first few days, plan on working with him for 10-15 minutes and then going for a 45-minute walk.

Also a lot of owners make the mistake of getting the dog excited about the walk first, so make sure you don’t give him any cues like “Want to go for a walk?” that will get him excited. Act calm and matter-of-fact while you get the leash. It’s best to say nothing at all.

Dogs learn through consequences. Most dogs get the hang of this very quickly, but depending on how long you and your dog have been practicing this behavior, it may take you a little longer.
