    Beagles bark.
If you didn’t want a barking dog, why did you get a beagle?

Muzzles are only short-term use items, and should not be kept on a dog for very long.

You could try to use a spray bottle filled with water. When she barks, say ‘no’ and spray her (avoid the face). See if that helps.

A muzzle will not stop her from barking. It will also make it difficult for her to pant properly, and also eat and drink.

Muzzles are only intended for temporary use to prevent biting, such as if the dog is being groomed, or for medical proceedures.

Dogs bark because they are bored, lonely, or not getting enough exercize. Work on some obedience with her, give her some games to do in your back yard, such as fetch. Take her for a walk.. if she barks at something while you are walking, gently tug on the leash, tell her no, then turn around and walk away from whatever she is barking at. Raweard and praise for desired behavoir.

ALL DOGS BARK, it’s a natural thing for a dog to bark and should not be discouraged when it is appropriate, i.e. when a stranger comes to the house, or if the dog hears out of place noises during the night. At these times your dogs bark is a welcome and reassuring warning. So you should only be training a dog not to bark at the wrong times.

However a dog that continually barks for no apparent reason can become a bit of a nuisance, both to you and to your neighbours. So training your a dog not to bark, should be a part of your overall dog behaviour training. Any random or nuisance barking should be stopped as soon as possible, preferably when the dog is still young, as it will become harder the older the dog gets.

If you are with your dog when it starts barking for no apparent reason, simply tell it to stop. The actual words or commands you use will not matter as long as you always use the same commands, and say them with authority. If this fails to have any effect, then try saying the commands while at the same time giving a quick jerk on its collar or leash. And remember to quietly praise him or her when they obey.

Solitary barking is when your dog barks when no one else is at home. (Or when it thinks no one else is at home.) It will often bark incessantly, if you have close neighbours and your dog is one of these, then you will soon know about it, as you will no doubt receive complaints pretty quickly. This type of barking can be a real nuisance and you should try to stop it right away.

One way of stopping a solitary barker is to pretend to leave the house, wait for it to start barking, and then quietly return and catch it in the act. Reprimand it with the same commands or phrases that you used before, and again quietly praise them when they stop. Doing this a few times should soon stop your dog from being a nuisance every time you leave the house.

You should try to stop your dog from becoming a solitary barker before it develops too far. You can easily do this with a few simple tips, such as getting it used to being alone gradually. Try going out just for short lengths of time to start with, and building up to longer and longer periods. You could also try leaving a radio on in the house for company, and make sure your dog has its favourite toy.

A dog is part of your family and should be shown the love and respect that it deserves. By training a dog not to bark at the wrong times, as part of a dog behaviour training programme, you are helping it and yourself to a more fulfilling and rewarding relationship that will last for years to come. (And you will probably get on with your neighbours a lot better as well.

Tell your mother that hitting her WILL NOT work! All it will do is make her afraid and possibly aggressive, and may make her barking worse. Also, a muzzle shouldn’t stop your dog from barking. She may not be able to open her mouth all the way but if she can open it at all she will still be able to make a lot of noise. It sounds like the best option for you would be some sort of corrective collar. Try a citronella spray one, which you put on your dog’s neck. It senses vibrations in their throats, and when they bark they get sprayed in the face. It’s harmless and can be very effective. I had to use one of these on my bloodhound (a big howler) for about a month, and it trained her so well that she very rarely howled even when she didn’t have it on. If this doesn’t work, another option is a shock collar, which works the same way but it gives them a small electrical shock everytime they bark. I would advise you to try the citronella spray one first though, because it doesn’t hurt them and is more humane. You should be able to get either of these for around $50 at any pet store.

No. It will muffle the bark, so instead you will hear “MARF MARF MARF!!!.” If you didn’t have the money to properly train the dog, why did you get a dog? To beat with a newspaper? To muzzle? Will you try shock collars next? A bored, untrained dog will be a nuisence barker.
The only way to circumvent this is obedience training and lots of exercise. Two long brisk walks a day, lots of play time, lots of time spent with the dog. And even if you can’t afford obedience classes, you still need to train your dog. Get some treats and dog training books, check out some training websites, etc. Work on different commands for short 5 minute intervals 5-6 times a day.
A fun game for puppy to teach “quiet” is to play the wild dog/freeze game. This is also a good way to reinforce stay after pup has learn stay. Basically, run around and roughhouse with your dog until you get it to the point that it is barking at you and having a good time. Once it starts barking a bit, freeze and say “quiet” in a calm, firm voice. Wait until he stops barking, say good boy and treat. Once he gets the rules of the game, you can say quiet when he gets himself riled up, and he will quiet for a treat. Eventually you can phase out the treats.

I read your other question about barking about a week ago.
I feel badly for both you and the dog.
You really need to start training this dog using positive methods. If you are unable to pay for a trainer, you can still learn about clicker training at this website: http://www.clickertraining.com/
and ask questions about it at this site:
    http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/ClickerSolutions

    A clicker costs about $2.

Using a muzzle for barking is cruel (this is usually reserved for aggressive biting dogs). Training is your best option for a long-term solution.

a certain type of muzzle like the nylon can not allow your dog to bark but it will not solve your dogs problem with barking. It will only not allow your dog to bark. The muzzle wont help you unless you keep it on your dog at all times which is a bad decision as your dog cant pant and could get caught on something. You could use a muzzle by, when anytime your dog starts barking, you quickly put the muzzle on for a minute as a consequence to get the dog to understand that whenever he starts barking he will have a muzzle put on him as a consequence. But there are much better methods you can use like the shock collar.
