Every time ANYONE…(even my family) enters through a door my dog barks his head off….if its a stranger that he doesn’t know..he keeps barking..he is almost 4 years old..is a pomeranian and is quite small..we think he barks because he is scared…because when he barks he runs right away from the person.. we think he is scared because he might of been abused by his previous owner… um he has done this barking since we got him when he was almost 1…what can we do to make him stop without using a shock collar?

thanks.. mahogany.
he isn’t left alone at all..there is always someone home..if not he is left alone for maybe an hour a day..and is always playful
um…all he does when you try to stop him from barking is run around the house……we can’t get him close to them really….please help!
one other problem is that my uncle sleeps down stairs during the day..so we can’t have him barking excesivly

There could be many reasons why your dog barkes at people. Is he scared? Is he left alone too much? I would suggest asking your vet to recommend a dog psychologist to treat the pooch, since you are against shock collars. If the problem is psychological, this idea may help.

    Mahogany,

Your pup probably is barking out of fear and he/she is trying to protect you. What you should try is making her get away from the door and sit before you let someone in. This way, the dog learns that it’s not okay to get near the door and bark at people.

Try having someone practice with you a few times. Have them knock or ring the bell and wait until your dog is under control. If all else fails, try a Caesar Milan tape or book.

A lot of dogs do this, just have the people who come in the door get level with him and let him sniff them out see if they are okay. He’ll stop barking when he realizes they are okay.

This is going to sound weird, but the best thing to do; ignore him!

When dogs bark, they’re trying to get your attention, whether it be a warning bark or a play bark. By giving them attention when they bark, even if it’s telling them to shush, you’re letting the dog get what he wants.

Start out by walking into your house yourself, and ignoring him until he stops barking. Once he’s done, THEN pay attention to him and praise him for being quiet. Once he does it for you, have a close friend or family member repeat this practice. Also, try giving him treats when he’s being quiet. Finally, have a stranger (to him anyway) do the exercise with him.

Once your dog realizes he’s getting attention for behaving well, he’ll learn real quick that being quiet earns him your affection.

then he wants to scare the “enemy” by running around while barking, it is their form of “retreating attack”. this means he wants to drive away the intruder in his territory while finding another one. he barks a lot maybe because he has a weak nose, a dog knows his masters by sleuthing them, but with such a nose, he is not familiar to his masters. consult a veterinarian.

Make sure you let your guests know what to do when your Dog comes up to them…. let them make a fist or show back of hand to your Pooch hand let Dog sniff, as Dogs work on smells and movements, anyway,if the Dog jumps up tell guest to gently put their KNEE UP so Dog cant get to them and “ignore” the Dog… as far as Barking goes, the Dog is simple alerting you to “intruders” and is only alert YOU the “Pack leader”, sound like your Dog needs to go one more LEASHED WALKS and make sure YOU leave the house out the door first to show your Dog YOU are the Pack Leader not him,…there is a great book called “DOG SPEAK”, it is very inexpensive I recommend it to all Dog owners.
